Getting there (and around)

  1. By Car:

    Driving offers flexibility for exploring the outer green spaces like Richmond Park, but central London has congestion and ULEZ charges to consider. Best for exploring beyond the city center.

  2. By Train and Tube:

    London’s Tube and train network is fast, eco-friendly, and connects every part of the city, from Hyde Park to Greenwich and beyond. Perfect for quickly reaching major parks and outdoor spots.

  3. By Bicycle:

    London’s Santander Cycles are ideal for short rides through parks and along scenic paths. The city’s growing cycle lanes make it an easy and eco-friendly way to explore green spaces.

  4. By Bus:

    London’s red buses are a great way to see the city and reach parks like Hampstead Heath and Battersea. They run frequently and cover areas not well-served by the Tube.

  5. By Boat:

    Hop on the Thames Clipper for a scenic ride along the river. It’s a fun, unique way to reach outdoor attractions like Greenwich, Battersea, and the Tower of London.

How long to stay

A stay of 4 to 7 days is perfect for exploring London’s outdoor spots, this leaves plenty of time to explore London’s major parks, take a boat ride on the Thames, and enjoy activities like forest school or treetop adventures. A shorter weekend stay will still let you explore the key green spaces and wildlife areas, we have an itinerary just for that!

When to go

London’s outdoor activities can be enjoyed year-round. Spring and summer (April to September) are ideal for warmer weather, picnics, and boating. Autumn brings beautiful colors to the parks, while winter offers crisp walks and quieter outdoor spots. Just pack for the weather, and there’s always an adventure waiting!

Itineraries

Your London adventure begins in the picturesque area of Little Venice. Start your day with breakfast at Café Laville, a cozy waterside spot where you can enjoy pastries, eggs, or pancakes while taking in views of the canal. 

After breakfast, it’s time to set off on a Little Venice Canal Boat Ride. Hop aboard one of the charming boats run by the London Waterbus Company and drift through the scenic canals towards Camden, passing through Regent’s Park. This peaceful 45-minute journey is a unique way to see a different side of London, and kids will love the novelty of traveling by boat.

Disembarking near Regent’s Park, your next stop is London Zoo, a short 15-minute walk away. Spend the morning exploring the zoo’s diverse animal habitats, where you’ll find everything from lions and tigers to playful penguins and curious meerkats. The zoo’s interactive exhibits are perfect for keeping kids entertained and inspired, making this stop a highlight for animal lovers of all ages.

For lunch, you have two options. Pick up sandwiches and treats from a local deli and enjoy a picnic on the lawns of Regent’s Park, surrounded by scenic gardens and the peaceful lake. Or, if you’re in the mood for a sit-down meal, head to Darcie & May Green, a colorful floating restaurant about a 20-minute walk away. Here, you’ll find fresh, Australian-inspired dishes with waterside views, ideal for recharging before your next adventure.

After lunch, make your way to Hyde Park for an afternoon on the water. Rent a rowing boat and paddle across the Serpentine Lake, a fun way to experience the park from a new perspective. For families with older kids, consider renting Santander bikes which are perfect for a faster-paced exploration of Hyde Park and beyond. The bike-friendly paths make it easy to hop on and off, letting you see more of the area in less time.

If you prefer to explore on foot, Hyde Park offers a beautiful start to an epic walking route. From here, continue through Green Park and into St. James’s Park, where you can enjoy scenic landscapes, quiet pathways, and views of Buckingham Palace. 

Next, head to the Southbank, enjoy a riverside walk. This cultural hotspot offers views of the Thames, the London Eye, and the Tate Modern. Street performers, pop-up stalls, and the vibrant atmosphere make it an exciting area to explore as you wind down.

Conclude your day with dinner at Borough Market, a short walk from the Southbank. Walking from Hyde Park to Borough Market will take approximately an hour in total,, with plenty of places to stop along the way.

Borough Market is bustling with food stalls offering everything from gourmet burgers to international cuisine. It’s the perfect place to unwind and reflect on a day full of adventure, sampling the diverse flavors London has to offer and ending your city exploration on a flavorful note.

Day 1: Gardens, Rivers, and Wildlife

Begin your day with breakfast at The Orangery Café, nestled within the serene surroundings of Kew Gardens. This charming café offers a delightful selection of pastries, fresh fruit, and aromatic coffees, providing a perfect start to your morning amidst the lush greenery.

After breakfast, embark on an exploration of Kew Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its vast collection of plants and stunning landscapes. Make your way to the Treetop Walkway, where you can stroll 18 meters above the ground, gaining a unique perspective of the forest canopy and the gardens below. This elevated path offers breathtaking views and a chance to observe wildlife in their natural habitat.

Following your visit to Kew Gardens, options to jump in a quick Uber, or set off on foot from Kew to Richmond. There is a simple, thirty minute direct walk via North Sheen, with plenty of options to grab a coffee en route. Alternatively head to the river and enjoy a longer one hour thirty minute route along the Thames Path which showcases river views, historic architecture, and the natural beauty that lines the path.

We recommend packing a picnic in advance to enjoy in the park, or you can grab lunch at one of Richmond’s many cozy pubs. If you’re heading on the riverside walk, drop into The White Cross, an iconic pub on Richmond’s riverside.

It’s time to hit the park, and get set for an unforgettable experience with a Deer Safari in Richmond Park. We recommend renting a bike from Park Cycle, with trailers available for the tiniest explorers. As London’s largest Royal Park, Richmond Park is home to over 600 free-roaming deer, and cycling around you will soak up the park’s history, its wildlife, and spot deer enjoying their natural environment.

After the safari, take a short walk to Ham House & Gardens, a beautifully preserved 17th-century mansion situated on the banks of the River Thames. Explore the opulent interiors filled with period furnishings and art, and wander through the meticulously maintained gardens that reflect the grandeur of the era.

Finish your day with a visit to Petersham Nurseries, located nearby. This enchanting garden center and restaurant offer a tranquil retreat, where you can enjoy an incredible meal amidst blooming plants and rustic charm. The nursery’s unique ambiance provides a perfect setting to relax and reflect on the day’s adventures.

Iif you’re still up for adventure as the sun sets, the London Wetland Centre offers evening events, especially during summer, where you can enjoy the tranquility of London’s wetlands and spot nocturnal wildlife.

Day 2: Dockside Discoveries

Start your day at Greenwich Park, where you can enjoy sweeping views of London from the park’s hilltop near the Royal Observatory. Head to the The Pavilion Cafe for breakfast, then stroll through the lush greenery and take in the serene start to your adventure. Don’t miss the chance to stand on the Prime Meridian Line; the line that marks 0° longitude, where East meets West. This spot gives you the unique opportunity to place one foot in each hemisphere.

Next, head down to the Cutty Sark, an iconic 19th-century British clipper ship. You can simply enjoy the walk, soak up the sights, or hop on  board and wander around this historic vessel, learning about its fascinating history and the global voyages it made, offering a dose of maritime history in the heart of Greenwich.

From here, walk through the Greenwich Foot Tunnel to Mudchute Farm. The tunnel itself is a unique experience, taking about 10–15 minutes on foot, and it brings you directly to the Isle of Dogs. If you’d prefer, you can also take the DLR from Greenwich to Crossharbour in around 5 minutes. Once at Mudchute, explore the farm’s wide range of animals, from llamas to goats, set against the backdrop of Canary Wharf’s skyscrapers. It’s a great blend of cityscape and countryside for all ages.

There’s plenty of great walking routes through the Isle of Dogs to get to your next stop, and for an unusual lunch stop head to The Big Easy where you can enjoy a lively atmosphere, live music, and riverside views from its moored boat setting.

You now have two options. If your kids are older, your next stop is Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre. This spot offers an array of water-based activities, including kayaking, sailing, and open-water swimming. It’s an epic way to experience London from the water and provides a refreshing change of pace.

Alternatively, head to GoBoat at Canary Wharf. No prior boating experience is needed, and it’s open to all ages. Cruise around the docklands at your own pace, and bring snacks for a floating picnic, and enjoy the unique canalside perspective of London.

Wrap up your day with a short journey on the Elizabeth Line (around 20 minutes) to Spitalfields Market. You can also hop on the Thames Clipper for part of the journey if you want to add a little more adventure to your day. Browse the eclectic stalls and indulge in the many food options, from gourmet bites to international flavors. It’s the perfect way to unwind, refuel, and celebrate a full day of dockside discoveries.

Wetlands Centre, Barnes

Located in Barnes, the London Wetland Centre is a beautiful wildlife reserve offering scenic walks, birdwatching opportunities, and educational exhibits. Spanning wetlands, lakes, and gardens, this tranquil spot is perfect for families looking to explore nature and spot rare bird species and other wildlife just outside central London.

Mud Club, Clapham

Mud Club in Clapham provides a messy, creative space where children can connect with nature through mud play, water activities, and hands-on exploration. Perfect for younger kids, this outdoor club encourages children to get dirty and creative, all while learning about the environment in a safe and engaging setting.

Morden Hall Park, South London

A National Trust gem, Morden Hall Park is a sprawling park in South London, featuring tranquil riverside walks, wetlands, and historic gardens. The park is great for family picnics, nature trails, and exploring its beautiful 125-acre grounds, offering a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle.

Chelsea Physic Garden, Chelsea

Founded in 1673, Chelsea Physic Garden is a botanical treasure in the heart of Chelsea. Known for its diverse collection of medicinal, edible, and useful plants, this historic garden provides a peaceful escape for families. Walthamstow Wetlands, East London

As Europe’s largest urban wetland nature reserve, Walthamstow Wetlands is a vast, 211-hectare site filled with reservoirs, marshes, and wildlife. Families can explore the walking and cycling paths, visit the viewing platforms, and spot diverse bird species. It’s an ideal day out for nature lovers wanting a taste of the wild in East London.

Vauxhall City Farm, Vauxhall

Nestled in the middle of Vauxhall, Vauxhall City Farm is a fun, educational farm where families can meet animals such as goats, alpacas, and chickens.
